UK bereavement contacts

Who to tell, how they want to be told, and what they will ask you for. Each entry is read from that organisation’s own bereavement page — not from a directory, and not from memory. No account required.

64 organisationsplus the 2 services that reach several at oncechecked 24 September 2026

The register

66 records, 13 sectors — the mark tells you which before you read the name.

Provenance of everything below

Every entry was read from that organisation’s own live bereavement page on the date stamped against it, and links straight back to it. Nothing here comes from a third-party directory, a search snippet, or memory. Last read 24 September 2026.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting as agent for any organisation listed. Routes and phone numbers change.

SONAR — our own weekly watch over every figure and link this site publishes — re-checks every link here and flags one that has moved, but it cannot edit an entry; a person re-reads the page and re-stamps it. If an entry and the source page disagree, believe the source page and treat ours as stale.

Where a route could not be read from an organisation’s own page, that organisation is left out and named as left out, with the reason — 9 of them, listed under the directory.

Two services tell several organisations at once

Start here, because telling one service is less work than telling fourteen. Between them these two cover most of government and many of the banks — but neither covers everything, and the gap is where people lose weeks. Read the limits as carefully as the routes.

One submission reaches

  • HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
  • Passport Office
  • Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
  • The local council
  • Veterans UK
  • Social Security Scotland
  • Some public-sector pension schemes, including the Armed Forces, Civil Service, Local Government (LGPS) and NHS schemes

Have ready

  • The Tell Us Once reference number from the registrar
  • The surname of the person who died and the date they died
  • Name, address and contact details of the executor or administrator
  • If there is a surviving spouse or civil partner: their name, address, telephone number and National Insurance number or date of birth
  • If not: the name and address of the next of kin
  • If they died in a hospital, nursing home, care home or hospice: the name and address of that institution
  • Their National Insurance number if they were paying into or drawing from a listed public-sector pension scheme

Worth knowing

  • It does not reach banks, building societies, insurers, utilities or telecoms — those still have to be told one by one.
  • You must use the service within 28 days of getting your reference number.
  • Available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. Not available for Northern Ireland, or if the person lived abroad permanently.
  • The death must have been registered, or reported to a coroner with a final or interim death certificate in hand.
  • You need permission from the surviving spouse or civil partner, next of kin, executor or administrator before giving their details.

Death Notification Service

Multi-institution service

One free online submission notifies every member bank and building society at the same time.

Death Notification Service — how to tell them, by channel
ChannelContact detail
OnlineFree online form at deathnotificationservice.co.uk

Have ready

  • Details of the person who died, entered on the online form (the service lists what it needs before you start)

Worth knowing

  • Notification only. Santander’s own bereavement page states plainly that the service tells them of the death but you still have to complete their bereavement form before an account can be closed or transferred — expect the same of other members.
  • Validation checks mean the notification reaches the institutions on a published timetable rather than instantly: for a Monday submission, by 4pm Tuesday if sent before noon, by 4pm Wednesday if sent after noon.
  • The service’s own guidance: if the case is urgent or complex — money or property needing release from the estate quickly — speak to the bank or building society directly first.
  • If someone has already notified the service about the same person, it stops you and directs you to its contact centre.
  • Members are listed on the service’s own site; it does not cover every institution.

  • No probate is needed for joint accounts.

In personAny HSBC UK branch

Have ready

  • The customer’s death certificate
  • The will, or a grant of probate, if you are named executor and want to open an executor bank account
  • A grant of probate or letters of administration — HSBC publishes amount limits above which they ask for one (£50,000 with a will, £25,000 without), and may still ask for one below those limits

Worth knowing

  • HSBC UK publishes explicit amount limits, and reserves the right to override them. On their own “What to do when someone dies” page: “Amount limits (UK residents): If there is a will (Grant of Probate): £50,000. If there is no will (Letters of Administration): £25,000” — followed immediately by “Every situation is different... We may still ask for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration even if the balance is below the amount limits above.” So the limits are real but not a guarantee. Read from hsbc.co.uk/help/life-events/bereavement/what-to-do-when-someone-dies/ on 2026-09-02.
  • Third-party guides sometimes quote these same limits without saying where they come from. These two are HSBC’s own published figures, read from their own page on the date below — but the limits are a starting point, not a promise: HSBC can still ask for a grant below them.
  • The portal lets you upload the death certificate, will or grant of probate without re-entering your details.

Have ready

  • The death certificate — their page asks for an original copy from the registrar. An interim death certificate or a coroner’s certificate is also accepted
  • A grant of probate or letters of administration where one is needed; they tell you whether it is

Worth knowing

  • You do not need the official death certificate to make the first notification — their page says telling them early helps protect the accounts from fraud.
  • A separate line, 0800 056 0171 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm), is for cases where Lloyds itself is named as executor.
  • Their page notes the grant of probate usually takes 8 to 16 weeks to come back from the Probate Registry, and administering an estate 9 to 12 months.
  • Being told about a death at Lloyds does not tell other organisations outside Lloyds Banking Group.

  • The death certificate — an interim death certificate or a coroner’s certificate is also accepted
  • A grant of probate where one is needed; their page says they may not need to see it, depending on the products held

Worth knowing

  • Halifax, Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland share one Lloyds Banking Group bereavement route — one notification covers the group’s own brands, but not organisations outside it.
  • 0800 056 0171 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) is the line for cases where Lloyds or Bank of Scotland is named as executor.
  • Mortgage payments remain due, but their page states they do not expect payments to be made for up to 18 months from the date of death while probate is obtained — the amount owed increases in the meantime.

  • Funeral or florist invoices and the original death certificate, if you want funeral costs paid from the account

Worth knowing

  • Santander is a Death Notification Service member, but their own page is explicit: the service only tells them of the death — you still have to complete their online or postal bereavement form before an account can be closed or ownership transferred.
  • Funeral director or florist costs can be paid from the account before a grant of representation or probate is issued.

  • There is a separate online route for legal-service representatives.

  • The grant of probate, letter of administration or will
  • If you are the next of kin: your relationship to the person who died, and proof of identity — a driving licence or passport

Worth knowing

  • They state they reply within 3 business days.
  • Anyone can tell them about a death, but on repaying money their bereavement guide says they take directions only from the executor of the estate, the next of kin, or a solicitor working on behalf of either.
  • Their release limit is on a separate help article, not the bereavement page: below £25,000 an indemnity form (and ID) is enough; above £25,000 they also need the grant of probate or letters of administration. OnlineChat with a Sky expert from the 'Get in touch' panel on sky.com/help/articles/deceased-sky-account-holder

Worth knowing

  • ⚠ Sky does not print its bereavement phone number on the page. It appears only after you select 'Get in touch' and then 'Call us' on Sky’s own site. We publish no number here rather than one taken from anywhere else — a wrong number in a bereavement directory is worse than a missing one.
  • Chat opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 09:00–17:30; Sky says a message sent outside those hours gets a response the following day.
  • Sky states the number is an 03 number: inclusive for Sky Mobile and Sky Talk customers, and otherwise costing the same as an 01 or 02 call and included in most call packages.
  • Upgraded from a deliberate omission on 2026-09-01. The route, the hours and what Sky will do are all verifiable; only the number is withheld by Sky’s own page.

OnlineThe 'Let us know an account holder has passed away' form at ee.co.uk/help/contact-ee/account-holder-passed

Worth knowing

  • ⚠ EE publishes no bereavement phone number, no email, no postal address and no document list on this page — it is a service-type selector and nothing more. What each branch of the form then asks for is not visible without submitting it, so we do not state it.
  • Upgraded from a deliberate omission on 2026-09-01. An earlier draft of this entry was rejected in verification for citing contact details that were not on EE’s own page. The route itself is real and verifiable, so the entry is published with the gaps left open rather than filled in.
  • EE and BT are both BT Group. BT’s own bereavement route is listed separately in this directory and is not interchangeable with this one.

Have ready

  • A copy of the death certificate

  • A valid photographic ID (passport, driving licence, or ID card) of the authorised person
  • The email address or phone number linked to the Amazon account — or, if unknown, a unique charge ID or order number to help locate it

Worth knowing

  • If you can’t provide the full authorisation documents, Amazon says it can still terminate subscriptions, stop recurring deliveries, or deactivate the account — but not close it or share account information.

Worth knowing

  • Even with a subpoena or court order, Microsoft’s page states this does not guarantee it will be able to assist.
  • For European legal requests specifically, Microsoft says it will respond to non-criminal subpoenas/court orders served on Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd, 70 Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2, Ireland — this is a legal-service address, not a next-of-kin postal route, and documents should not be posted there.
  • Germany and China each have their own separately published document-based process on this page; no equivalent is published for the UK.

Have ready

  • Full name, date of birth and date of death of the person who has died
  • Their last known address, including postcode
  • Plan number, if known (optional — the form notes it can be found on their annual statement)
  • Digital copy of the Death Certificate (optional upload — the form can be submitted without it)
  • Your relationship to the deceased, and whether you are the Executor
  • Details of any spouse/civil partner, children, dependants and other living relatives — the form states this helps confirm who the beneficiaries are

Worth knowing

  • It’s okay if you can’t, or don’t want to, send the Death Certificate today — a specialist in the Bereavements Team will be in contact within 2 weeks of the form being submitted.
  • Standard Life’s general bereavement page (standardlife.co.uk/help/bereavement) says phone or written notification is also possible via a separate Contact Us page, but no bereavement-specific phone number or postal address is published on either page as fetched — checked 2026-08-31.

Experian UK

Credit file

An executor or administrator sends Experian a copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, proof of their own identity, and proof of their own address by post — ideally via a Statutory Credit Report application — to have the deceased’s file marked and released. The page does not give a postal address directly; it directs requesters to Experian’s separate Contact Us page for the address to send documents to.

Have ready

  • A copy of the Grant of Probate or Grant of Letters of Administration confirming you are authorised to deal with the financial affairs of the deceased
  • A photocopy of either your own passport, birth certificate or full driving licence
  • Two original documents dated within the last three months, confirming where you live and would like the report sent to
  • Ideally a completed Statutory Credit Report application, or a letter giving the deceased’s full name and any previous names, date of birth, and addresses for the last 6 years

Worth knowing

  • If you don’t yet have the Grant of Probate, Experian’s page says to contact them and they’ll help you through the process.
  • The cited page does not state a postal address or a processing timescale for this request; both would need sourcing from a separate Experian page before being published.

  • Tell Us Once cancels the licence, removes the person as keeper of up to 5 vehicles, and ends the vehicle tax.
  • You must still tell DVLA separately when you sell a vehicle, when you keep a vehicle — even temporarily and even if it is not being used — and if you want to keep a personalised registration number, which has to be done before the vehicle is sold.

Have ready

  • The TV Licence number — on any letters or emails sent to the licence holder, or on their bank statements
  • The licence expiry date
  • Bank details, for the refund

Worth knowing

  • Nobody at the address is left uncovered while this is sorted out: TV Licensing states anyone living at the address is still covered by the current licence until it expires.
  • You do not need the licence number to notify them — TV Licensing says to call 0300 131 1261 instead if you can’t find it.
  • If the person who died was over 75 and held a free TV Licence, there is no refund, and the route is a different number: 0300 790 6117. Anyone else at the address who is 74 or over and receives Pension Credit may be entitled to a free licence of their own.
  • The same page also renders 0300 790 6143 for the transfer route and 0300 131 1262 for the over-75 route, alongside the two numbers published above. We publish the pair that appears in the page’s own expanded bereavement guidance and record the variants here rather than hide them — if you reach a wrong queue, the others are on the same page.
  • Added 2026-09-01. It was omitted on 2026-08-20 because bot protection returned an Incapsula block. Read through a real browser on 2026-09-01 the page is fully legible, and everything above was taken from it verbatim — but the block returns intermittently, and the weekly watcher will report this entry UNREADABLE whenever it does. That verdict means the watcher could not see the page, NOT that the route has changed: re-read it by hand rather than treating silence as drift.

In personAt a Post Office branch, with the appropriate documentation

Have ready

  • The identification listed on the Special Circumstances application form itself — Royal Mail’s page asks you to enclose it with the form, or take it to a Post Office branch, rather than naming the documents on the page

Worth knowing

  • This route is distinct from Royal Mail’s standard 3/6/12-month paid redirection for people moving home, and is not available to set up online.
  • Royal Mail’s general redirection guidance says to apply as soon as possible, as they need at least five working days to arrange any redirection; the page does not state this specifically for the bereavement/Special Circumstances route, but the same operational lead time is likely to apply.
  • Royal Mail’s redirection page now links the Special Circumstances application form and a Special Circumstances leaflet directly, and gives the Redirection Centre’s postal address (read in a browser 2026-09-24; the page does not render without JavaScript). Any fee and a direct phone line are not stated on the page.

Left out on purpose

These organisations are missing because their route could not be read from their own page on the date we checked — not because they have no bereavement team. Go to their own site rather than trusting a number from anywhere else.

  1. Royal London — the bereavement page routes by policy type to one of ~10 different numbers; no single publishable route could be pinned on 2026-08-20
  2. Utilita — Utilita's own bereavement article is indexed by their site search but the page itself currently 404s / resolves to an empty results page on utilita.co.uk (confirmed via WebFetch and live browser render, both direct URL and via the site's own search autocomplete) as of 2026-08-31; no route, phone number, or document list could be verified.
  3. Coventry Building Society — Coventry Building Society's own two live pages give two different numbers for the same 'bereavement team', both stated as the number to call and both with slightly different hours: the main Register a bereavement page (coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk/.../register-a-bereavement.html) says 0800 121 4565, Mon–Fri 9am–7pm; its own linked bereavement FAQ page (.../register-a-bereavement/bereavement-faqs.html) repeatedly says 0800 587 4565, Mon–Fri 8am–7pm. Checked 2026-08-31 against both raw page sources — no dated-update marker or other signal on either page resolves which is current. Publishing either risks handing a bereaved caller the wrong number, so the institution is omitted rather than guessed.
  4. Scottish Widows — Every URL tried on scottishwidows.co.uk (contact-us/bereavement.html, investing/help-and-guidance/existing-customer/bereavement.html, existing-customer/bereavement.html, and /bereavement) returned a Cloudflare technical-error page ("Error 1007") on WebFetch instead of the actual bereavement content — no route, phone number, or document list could be verified on the institution's own live page as of 2026-08-31. The only text on the error page (0345 716 6777, a general enquiries line) is not confirmed as the bereavement-specific route and was not used.
  5. Phoenix Life — Phoenix Life's own death-notification page does not publish a single route — it routes by which company the policy was originally with, via a dropdown of legacy provider names (e.g. Peterborough, ReAssure): "To find the contact details for our customer centre team responsible for your policy, please choose the name of the company your policy was with before it became part of Phoenix Life." No single publishable phone number, email or postal address could be pinned to "Phoenix Life" as one entity on 2026-08-31.
  6. The People's Pension — peoplespension.co.uk blocked every WebFetch attempt with HTTP 403 Forbidden — the beneficiary contact-us page (tried on both thepeoplespension.co.uk and the redirected www.peoplespension.co.uk), the bereavement-claim help page, the bereavement-form download, and the plain homepage all returned 403 with no body retrieved. No route, phone number, or document list could be verified on the institution's own live page as of 2026-08-31.
  7. Spotify — no dedicated bereavement or deceased-account page exists on support.spotify.com — only Spotify Community forum threads and third-party guides describe the process; the one plausible official page (general Contact Us) makes no mention of death, bereavement, or deceased accounts. No route could be verified from Spotify's own page as of 2026-08-31.
  8. Equifax UK — No bereavement/deceased-person notification route exists on equifax.co.uk as of 2026-08-31. Their own 'Death and credit reports' article (equifax.co.uk/resources/loans-and-credit/death-and-credit-reports.html) only explains the general concept ('It's important to notify credit reference agencies about the death... Once probate is obtained, the executor or administrator can request a copy of the deceased's credit report') without giving Equifax's own contact channel. Their Vulnerable Consumer Support hub (equifax.co.uk/customer-support/home), under 'Life Events > Dealing with the death of a friend or a loved one', links only to generic Knowledge Centre articles (registering a death, closing a bank account, inheritance tax) — again no Equifax-specific phone, email, postal address or form for a deceased-person/executor request. Their statutory-report page and downloadable application PDF (credit-report-application-form.pdf) are explicitly for a living person's own report only. A wrong or fabricated route here would be worse than no entry, so this institution is omitted.
  9. TransUnion UK — No bereavement, deceased-person or executor route exists on transunion.co.uk as of 2026-08-31. A full-text read of their Consumer Support hub (transunion.co.uk/consumer/consumer-support, ~99,000 characters covering every published FAQ category — credit report basics, what's on your report, declined credit/disputes/corrections, their credit score, fraud & protecting your identity, and data/privacy/accessibility) contains zero mentions of 'deceased', 'death', 'bereavement' or 'executor'. Only the generic living-customer statutory-report contact channels are published (email UKConsumer@transunion.com, phone 0330 024 7574 Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, post to TransUnion Consumer Services Team, PO Box 647, Unit 4, Hull HU9 9QZ) — with no stated process or document list for someone acting on behalf of a person who has died. Publishing those generic channels as if they were a confirmed bereavement route would misrepresent what TransUnion's own page actually says, so this institution is omitted rather than guessed.

Three things nearly all of them want

Gather these once and most of the list becomes routine. Everything below is drawn from the entries above — no organisation is characterised beyond what its own page says.

The death certificate

Almost every entry here wants it, and most accept a photocopy, an interim certificate or a coroner's certificate rather than the original. Two say they do not need it at all — BT states so outright, and DVLA's page says not to send one. Nationwide and Lloyds will take the first notification before you have it.

Proof you can act

Above a balance threshold, banks stop taking your word for it and want the grant of probate or letters of administration. The threshold is set by each bank, not by law: Barclays and Santander publish more than £50,000, Starling more than £30,000. HSBC publishes £50,000 where there is a will and £25,000 where there is not, and still reserves the right to ask for a grant below either. So check the bank you are actually dealing with; one bank's number never transfers to another.

Proof of who you are

Photo identification is a hard gate on some online routes rather than a formality. TSB's form cannot be completed without a photographed driving licence or passport, and Starling wants a certified copy unless you bank with them. Aviva warns that if it cannot confirm your identity, there are policy details it will not share.

ScopeWhat is in, and what is not

What this set covers.

What is in it. Banks, building societies, energy, water, telecoms, insurers, pension providers, digital accounts, post, credit reference and licensing bodies.

What is not in it yet. Most pension schemes (one provider so far), share registrars and investment platforms, and local-authority services.

Why something is left out. An organisation whose bereavement route could not be read from its own page is omitted and named in the page's omissions list, rather than guessed at.

How this list is kept honest

A wrong phone number in a bereavement directory is worse than no entry at all. So the method is deliberately narrow, and the limits are published alongside the list rather than buried.

  1. Every route was read from the organisation’s own live page — not from a directory, a search result, or memory.
  2. Where a route could not be read, the organisation is left out and named as left out, with the reason.
  3. Each entry carries the date it was read. That date is the claim; the source link is the proof.
  4. SONAR — our own weekly watch over every figure and link this site publishes — re-checks every link here, flags a page that has moved, and flags a phone number that no longer appears on the page.
  5. SONAR cannot edit an entry. It surfaces; a person re-reads the page and re-stamps it.
  6. Verification earned its keep twice. Widely-repeated third-party guides put one bank’s probate threshold at £10,000; that bank’s own page says £30,000.
  7. The second catch was ours, and it went the other way. This page once said HSBC published no threshold at all — because the check had read HSBC’s bereavement hub page and their downloadable guides, none of which carry one. They sit one page deeper, on What to do when someone dies: £50,000 with a will, £25,000 without, and HSBC may still ask for a grant below either. Corrected 2 September 2026. Reading part of a source is not reading the source — so “we could not find it” is never published here as “it does not exist”.

Go further — the order to do this in

This page tells you where to write. It does not tell you when. The free executor checklist sequences the whole twelve months — notifications sit in its 7–28 day phase, after the death is registered and before probate.

Would rather be asked than have to remember the order yourself? The guided bereavement walkthrough asks one question at a time and tells you what's next.

Questions, answered plainly

No. It is a directory of each organisation's own published bereavement route, read off their own page and dated. Valoren is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting as agent for any organisation listed.

Every entry links to the source page so you can check it yourself, and each carries the date we last read it. Where a route could not be read from the organisation's own page — because it renders client-side or sits behind bot protection — we left them out rather than copying a number from a third-party directory.
No. Tell Us Once reaches government, not commerce. It notifies HMRC, DWP, the Passport Office, DVLA, your local council, Veterans UK, Social Security Scotland and several public-sector pension schemes.

It does not reach banks, building societies, insurers, utilities or telecoms. Those still have to be told one by one, or through the Death Notification Service where the institution is a member. This is the single most common misunderstanding about the service.
No — it notifies, it does not close anything. Santander's own bereavement page states it plainly: the service tells them of the death, but you still have to complete their own bereavement form before an account can be closed or ownership transferred.

Treat it as the way to stop the accounts being live, then expect a second, institution-specific step for each one. The service also warns that if money or property needs releasing urgently, you should speak to the bank directly first.
Because each bank sets its own. There is no statutory figure at which a bank must see a grant of probate — it is each institution's own risk policy, which is why the published figures here differ so widely from one bank to the next.

Some publish no figure at all — NatWest, Lloyds and Halifax decide case by case — while HSBC publishes two, £50,000 with a will and £25,000 without, and can still ask for a grant below them. Never assume one bank's figure applies to another — and be wary of third-party lists quoting a threshold the bank itself does not publish. We found exactly that on one entry here.
More than one, because the organisations here do not agree. Barclays, Santander and Nationwide accept a photocopy. Lloyds’ page asks for an original from the registrar, and Starling wants a certified copy of your own photo ID alongside it.

BT and DVLA say they do not need the certificate at all. Since several want a document in hand at the same time, one certificate becomes the bottleneck — and the organisations that need nothing are the exception here, not the rule.
Check the source link first — it is the authority, not this page. Every entry shows the date we last read the organisation's own page, and SONAR — our own weekly watch over every figure and link this site publishes — re-checks each link and flags a route that has moved or a number that no longer appears.

What SONAR cannot do is edit an entry. A person re-reads the page and re-stamps it, because a robot writing a phone number into a bereavement directory is exactly the failure this format exists to prevent. Organisations are missing where we could not read their route from their own page — the data file names them rather than quietly omitting them.
