The Executor's First Hour Pack · £179 one-off

A 12-section first-hour brief, prepared by hand for your situation within 4 hours.

First page of the Executor's First Hour pack, prepared for a named executor.

What to do, in what order

Four prepared documents. The First Hour Brief — twelve sections, your estate's own dates computed from the date of death, and every UK bank's bereavement position in a dated table — with a Funeral Director Brief, a Family Meeting Agenda and a Tell Us Once Companion alongside it. Around 50 pages in all.

Each is its own PDF, prepared from your answers, so the Funeral Director Brief can go to the funeral director and the Family Meeting Agenda to the family without handing either of them the rest.

STEP solicitor probate engagement for the full administration of an estate typically costs £3,000–£8,000. The Pack at £179 is 2–6% of that.

It is not a substitute for solicitor engagement; it makes the executor's own work efficient so that the solicitor engagement is also efficient.

A short intake, then your personalised pack prepared by hand within 4 hours and delivered as a PDF to the email you provide.14 days. Easy Exit Guarantee.

Nothing you start with is wasted. The £179 counts in full toward the Household Continuity Dossier’s first year (£195, then £99/yr) for 30 days — £195 becomes £16. Use the same email at checkout and it applies automatically.

What this can save

Most of an executor's burden is not the decisions. It is the hours, the cost and the wait around them.

80–220 hours
Estate administration

Most of it is discovery and chasing, not paperwork — working in order keeps it nearer the low end.

£3,000–8,000
Full solicitor probate

An indicative planning band, not a quote — full professional administration of a straightforward estate (+VAT).

£526 + £2/copy
The DIY probate floor

The court fee for an organised personal applicant, sealed copies extra — no professional fee at all.

None of this is the law's doing. It is the search around it — and the search is the part a prepared estate can spare you.

The most urgent steps. These protect the estate and prevent complications that are genuinely difficult to undo later.

Check with the solicitor first, then the home, then any safe deposit box.

Required within 5 days of the medical examiner's office confirming you can register, in England and Wales.

Attend the local register office with the medical certificate of cause of death.

Order at least 5–10 certified copies — most institutions require an original, not a photocopy.

Call each bank.

Accounts will be frozen once notified — do not delay informing them.

Request final statements.

Joint accounts may continue with the surviving holder, but you will need to confirm this specifically.

Email accounts are the highest priority — email is the recovery route for almost every online service.

Do not close any accounts, factory-reset any devices, or delete any data until you have confirmed there are no digital assets or recovery paths involved.

The registrar will offer this at the point of death registration.

One notification reaches HMRC, DWP, DVLA, the Passport Office, and the local council simultaneously.

It covers public-sector bodies only — private institutions must be contacted separately.

FAQ

Questions, answered honestly.

The short intake takes about ten minutes.

Once you've paid, your brief is prepared by hand for your situation and delivered as a PDF within 4 hours.

No. The intake, payment and delivery all work without one — no card is taken to start.

No. This is a guide to help you gather the right information and act in the right order.

It is not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for solicitor engagement — it makes that engagement more efficient if you need one.

You pay first — there is no questionnaire in front of the card.

Straight after payment you are given a short intake, about ten minutes. A Signum specialist prepares your brief from those answers, and it's delivered to your inbox within 4 hours of your details arriving.

The brief flags where professional advice is worth getting — business interests, IHT400 territory, contested wills.

A full STEP solicitor probate engagement typically runs £3,000–£8,000; the Pack is a fraction of that and is designed to make that engagement efficient, not replace it.

Yes — the Easy Exit Guarantee gives you a full refund within 14 days.

Sensitive fields are encrypted end-to-end on your device, and your answers are used solely to prepare your brief.

This is written for a named executor, a co-executor, or anyone who has been asked to handle things — you don't need to be formally appointed yet to use it.

If you're not sure where you stand, the free Executor's Companion below covers who administers an estate when there's no will.

Yes, and for a straightforward estate it may be all you need. The form walkthroughs on this site are free and cover PA1P, IHT400, BD8 and the rest step by step.

Tell Us Once reaches HMRC, DWP, DVLA, the Passport Office and the local council in one notification. The free Death Notification Service, accepted by most major UK banks, notifies multiple banks in one submission.

Work through those in the right order and you will get there without paying us anything.

What £179 buys is the order itself — your estate's own sequence, deadlines and next actions written up from your answers and delivered within 4 hours, instead of assembling it from forty tabs while grieving.

If you have the time and the estate is simple, use the free route: it is on this site because it works.

It tells the public sector in one go — and only the public sector. Tell Us Once is offered when you register the death. One notification reaches HMRC, the DWP, the DVLA, the Passport Office and the local council at the same time.

It does not cover everything. Banks, insurers and other private institutions are not told — you contact each of those yourself, separately.

There is a window. You have 28 days to use the service, counted from the day you receive the unique reference at registration.

Two figures are in circulation, and both are real. GOV.UK's own stated expectation is "usually within 12 weeks" of submitting the application — and longer if more information is needed.

The measured wait is shorter for digital and longer for paper. HMCTS's own figures put the average wait at 4.3 weeks for digital applications and around 16 weeks for paper applications.

Those are waits for the grant, not for the whole estate — the law does not require a personal representative to distribute the estate before 12 months from the date of death.

It protects you personally, from creditors you did not know about. Placing a deceased-estates notice in The Gazette gives an executor statutory protection from personal liability to unknown creditors, under section 27 of the Trustee Act 1925.

It does not cover debts you already knew about — the protection is specifically against creditors who were unknown to you.

The two months is the wait before it applies. Protection applies once at least two months have passed from the date of publication — placed online, the notice costs £115.86 including VAT.

Some steps have real clocks. Distribution has a floor, not a finish line. In England and Wales the death must be registered within 5 days. Tell Us Once must be used within 28 days of receiving the unique reference at registration. And once a Gazette notice is placed, allow at least two months from publication before distributing.

On distribution, the law gives a floor. Under section 44 of the Administration of Estates Act 1925, a personal representative is not legally required to distribute the estate before 12 months from the date of death — the executor's year. It says only that you are not required to distribute before then, not that you must finish by then.

One concession is time-limited too — council tax on an empty property may be exempt for up to six months.

Most of the brief comes before the probate application, let alone the grant. The first 48 hours and the first two weeks are all pre-application work: locating the will, registering the death, notifying the banks, securing digital accounts, registering for Tell Us Once, identifying every asset and account, contacting the insurers, redirecting the post, and cancelling subscriptions and direct debits.

Expect each bank to freeze the account once notified. Request final statements at that point. A joint account may continue with the survivor, but confirm that specifically with the bank.

The property needs looking after in the meantime — secure it, keep the home insurance running, arrange probate valuations and notify the mortgage lender. The probate application itself sits in the three-month phase.
